I have a 1996 Cherokee classic and I am starting to build it up for off-roading. although most of its in good shape, im afraid the rear axle will not be able to handle on trails. Its a Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts, with 3.73:1 gear ratios. I am looking to upgarde it and possibly swap it for better. any advice for what to look for would be helpful.

The 8.25 really isnt that bad of a axle. The worst part is the availability of parts. If you are that worried than upgrade to a newer one with the 29 spline shafts. if you compare, they are pretty close to the d44. The d35 has alot of hype because you can buy just about anything for it. dollar for dollar I would stick with the 8.25 There is a book out there called "High-Performance Jeep Cherokee XJ Builders Guide" Alot of info to help you. I found mine at a book store in indiana called Barns n Noble. Or you can try www.cartechbooks.com
