Oct 18th, 85,000ish miles. Dropped the cross member (I call it a skid-plate)
and dropped the transmission pan today. I have the auto transmission and it's
been dripping fluid since I obtained this vehicle back at 79,000 miles. So far
so good. After the initial test drive, no drips or obvious leaks. We'll see at
the end of the week. The old filter had dirt and metal shavings stuck to it, and
the magnet in the bottom of the pan looked fuzzy from all the metal bits it had
picked up.
Did you change the transmission pan
last year? I think your strategy
on maintaining your tranny is
simple yet worthy to be tried.

I've continued to lose
transmission fluid all year.
After it drops about a pint below
the add line, it seems to stop
losing fluid. I tightened the pan
bolts the other day and that was
probably part of it, but there is
always a drip on the bottom of the
bell housing, well forward of the
pan. This drip makes me think
that it's the torque converter or
a seal on the input shaft up in
the bell housing. At least the
leaking fluid that get's blown all
over the underside of the vehicle
is preventing some rust.

Sounds average for a auto
transmission, they use say if you
have no more that a teaspoon of
shavings in the pan you are in
good shape.
